Adrián Mata

Hello! My name is Adrián Mata, and I am a third-year student pursuing a combined BA/MA program in International Studies and Global Governance, Politics, and Security. I am currently the Program Leader for Professor Gur’s “Identity and Intergroup Conflict” seminar, and one of this semester’s Senior Program Leaders. Being a PL has genuinely been one of the highlights of my time here at AU, as the position has placed me at the intersection of academia, professional work, and the larger AU community. The nature of the position enticed me, as working alongside faculty to foster a welcoming environment for students has given me the unique opportunity to be a mentor, student, and friend. One of my favorite things about such a role is that I have been able to immerse myself in a class, its students and discussions, and absorb the teachings of lectures far removed from my major. Just in the last year, I have learned extensively about education policy and global food insecurity!

Professionally, I have been able to develop skills to better prepare for my rapidly approaching entrance into a career. Interpersonal communication has been crucial, as I have interacted both vertically and horizontally with students, faculty, and PL colleagues. Through co-curriculars, I have strengthened my ability to plan events and coordinate with the necessary parties for efficient and effective execution. Additionally, I have gained confidence in my ability to adapt. Whether it's molding my advice to address a situation properly, resolving conflicts between students, or quickly managing administrative issues, the job is full of opportunities to become comfortable with handling situations as they come.

For anyone considering becoming a PL or who has been hired and is inching toward their first experience, I recommend being present. Letting the conversation come to and pass through you, both in group and one-on-one settings, can truly blossom into fantastic connections. Take time to meet with every willing student individually and give them the chance to show you their personality outside the classroom. On one hand, these are your peers at AU, and it will never hurt to have another friend. On the other hand, giving people the space to present themselves outside of their academic environment allows them to be genuine, which helps them to feel at home on campus and comfortable in class. I highly recommend the job to anyone interested in applying and am here for any questions!
