For the Greater Good

At American University, research goes beyond mere discovery; it embodies a commitment to gathering knowledge that benefits humanity. Our scholars collaborate across disciplines to tackle urgent challenges in science, education, health, and policy. As an R1 research university, a prestigious designation reserved for institutions with the highest levels of research activity, we turn groundbreaking ideas into real-world impact. We pursue research with purpose, delivering solutions that serve communities and advance the greater good.

Using Entertainment and Humor to Build Civic Impact

Professor Caty Borum explores how comedy, entertainment, and media can drive social change and strengthen civic life. Through her leadership of the Center for Media & Social Impact and initiatives like the Yes…And Laughter Lab, she examines how storytelling shapes public opinion, human rights, and democracy. Inspired by mentor Norman Lear, Borum combines scholarship, filmmaking, and teaching to encourage critical thinking, media literacy, and responsible communication. Her work empowers students and creators to use entertainment as a force for change and humanity.
