The world has always been complex, but today’s challenges require a different kind of thinking—the kind that the School of International Service (SIS) has long prepared its students for.

As significant shifts unfold in the international affairs landscape, SIS continues to train future leaders for impactful careers across a range of sectors and support alumni as they navigate new realities. While the global policy and international affairs spheres can be unpredictable, one thing remains constant: the world will always need international affairs professionals who are ready to lead and serve.

We asked SIS alumni—leaders across the government, nonprofit, and private sectors—to offer words of wisdom to our current students about why studying international relations matters in this critical moment.

I won’t pretend this moment is easy. Climate change is accelerating. Democratic norms are weakening. Populist extremism is growing louder. It feels like the world is shifting under our feet.

But one thing that keeps me going is knowing how many smart, passionate, and values-driven people are out there doing great work. I’ve spent time in rooms around the world with people facing the same challenges we’re facing here. Whether it’s migration, democratic decline, or climate instability, every country is searching for answers and looking to the next generation of leaders to help find them.

Studying international affairs prepares you to meet this moment with clarity and purpose. It gives you the tools to step into spaces shaped by uncertainty and help build what comes next.

The reality is, despite what current headwinds or swirl may be taking place, there is always change, complexities and challenges to identify and resolve. There is always the need for individuals willing to cooperate, engage and bring forward ideas and solutions that carry with them the perspectives of many.
