Bio
Gül M. Gür is a Senior Lecturer in the Washington Semester Program at the School of Public Affairs, American University. She is a scholar-practitioner in conflict analysis and resolution whose work engages with comparative politics and international relations, focusing on identity, intergroup conflict, and peace processes, particularly the Cyprus conflict and peace process.
Her research examines intercommunal trust, victimhood, and reconciliation in divided societies. She is the author of Minority Memory, Identity, and Reconciliation (2025), which received the Best Book Award from the International Association of Reconciliation Studies. Her recent articles include “Functional Coexistence in Cyprus” (2025) and “Peacebuilding in Cyprus through Sustained Superordinate Cooperation: The Case of the Technical Committees” (2026).
At American University, she teaches courses on identity and intergroup conflict, international peace and security, and political violence. She previously taught at George Mason University Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution and has worked with organizations including Search for Common Ground and the Institute for Economics and Peace.
She currently serves as Secretary of the International Association of Reconciliation Studies and contributes to global scholarly and practitioner networks on reconciliation and peacebuilding.
