The second week marked the official start of the orientation program. The Fellows received a comprehensive overview of the Humphrey Fellowship, its requirements, and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead. They also participated in essential sessions on safety and security, learned about the invaluable role of their community host families, and explored the vast resources of the Pence Law Library. The week also included professional development opportunities and a technology training session. The Fellows gained insights into WCL's Honor Code, explored counseling support services, and engaged in discussions about U.S. professionalism and etiquette. The week concluded with a virtual ASPE Benefits session and a heartwarming welcome reception with their community host families.
The third week was a whirlwind of activities that showcased the program's commitment to community engagement, cultural immersion, and academic excellence. The Fellows kicked off the week by participating in the "In My Backyard" initiative, rolling up their sleeves to volunteer at the Capital Area Food Bank, the largest hunger relief organization in the Washington DC metro area. Their dedication to serving the community was truly inspiring.
The Fellows also attended an important session on sexual assault/harassment prevention and support, led by the Office of Equity and Title IX. This session underscored AU's commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive campus environment.
Mid-week, the Fellows experienced a quintessential American national pastime: a baseball game! Watching the Washington Nationals battle it out with the Colorado Rockies at Nationals Park, they enjoyed an evening of camaraderie, ballpark snacks, and the thrill of the game.
The week concluded with a blend of academic and social events. The Fellows joined the incoming L.L.M class for orientation, receiving a warm welcome from Interim Dean of the Washington College of Law, Heather Hughes, and attending an informative L.L.M Board presentation. A self-guided tour of the AUWCL campus allowed them to familiarize themselves with their new academic home. The week ended on a high note with a festive Community BBQ and an exploration of the wider American University campus, where the Fellows got a taste of the vibrant student life and impressive facilities beyond the law school.
