Our Vision

The vision of the Advancing College Teaching for Student Success National Center is that all students in every college course across the United States experience teaching that uses evidence-based practices for student learning. In this vision, every student engages in a learning process that supports a thriving workforce, democratic outcomes, and the opportunity to succeed.

Our Mission

The mission of the Advancing College Teaching for Student Success National Center is to elevate and nurture teaching excellence systemically across US higher education.

The Center supports higher education stakeholders in creating and sustaining systemic changes to value, reward, incentivize, and develop teaching excellence. The Center serves as a hub for organizations that have interests in college teaching excellence at scale. This includes a leadership coalition of national higher education associations, policy-makers, scholars, media, disciplinary associations, and additional key leaders. It also designates and facilitates a network of Teaching Excellence Colleges and Universities to ensure these institutions are seen, valued, and nurtured in a community together.

The Center supports public understanding of teaching excellence in higher education—creating expectations for every student to have positive teaching and learning experiences in college and naming institutions that provide these experiences. This includes promoting definitions of college teaching excellence and supporting the development of measures. Finally, the Center produces cutting edge research about effective systemic change processes that elevate and nurture teaching excellence at scale and produce robust student success, democratic outcomes, and economic mobility.

Current Work

The current work of ACTSS include the Alliance for Better College Teaching (ABCT).

ABCT envisions a higher education system where every student experiences evidence-based teaching practices in every course.

In this vision:

  • College teaching excellence is the norm and is grounded in research with proven effectiveness;
  • Faculty are hired, mentored, rewarded, and supported for enacting evidence-based teaching in their institutions and in their disciplines;
  • Graduate students are prepared to teach using evidence-based practices; and
  • The future of higher education is more aligned with the evolving needs of students and society.
