Next Steps for Admitted Students
Welcome to the Washington Semester Program and congratulations on your admission! This page will help you navigate the next steps as you prepare to join us in Washington, D.C.
Check your new student email account regularly and download the Microsoft Outlook app with notifications enabled to stay up to date.
You will receive a welcome email—please read it carefully and complete the action items, including scheduling your first internship advising session, reviewing important dates, housing and registration information, and additional onboarding tasks.
Admitted Student Checklists
Fall

Accept your Offer and Enroll
To enroll in the Washington Semester Program, please submit your enrollment deposit of $400 online:
- Create your myau.american.edu account using your AU ID, which can be found in your acceptance email.
- Log into Eagle Finance with your myAU username and password to pay your non-refundable deposit by e-check or credit card.
Please note that this deposit is non-refundable and will be held in your student account to be credited toward your tuition.

Initiate Visa Process (Students from International Universities)
Initiate the process of requesting your J-1 visa
To proceed with the immigration process, submit the following via the application portal:
- A copy of your passport’s biological page
- An official bank letter showing proof of funds
- A completed, signed, and dated CFIS form
- Proof of English Proficiency

Begin your Internship Search
Take advantage of the internship resources, available to you one week after submitting your deposit.
- Access the Internship Web
contains hundreds of internship openings and thousands of leads
Login and password available after submitting deposit - Use AU templates and upload your resume and cover letter to the Internship Web

Submit the Registration Form
Available Early April
Students will receive instructions on how to submit their registration form from the WSP advisor who will process registration requests.
Before enrolling in courses at AU, all students must review:- The American University Academic Integrity Code

Register for Accommodations (if needed)
Available After Submitting Deposit
Students who are new to American University must register with the Academic Support and Access Center (ASAC) by submitting documentation and completing the three-step process outlined on their website.
Students should follow all priority deadlines outlined on the website to ensure accommodations are in place by the beginning of the semester; requests received outside of these deadlines will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Submit the Immunization Form
Available After Submitting Deposit
Email your Immunization Form or a copy of your current immunization record to immunizations@american.edu or submit it in the student health portal.

AU Health Insurance + Waiver Option
International students must enroll in AU Student Health Insurance. Domestic students may either remain in the AU plan or waive it with proof of alternative coverage. All full-time students are automatically enrolled in the AU Health Plan.
Eligible students may waive the AU Health insurance after they have been enrolled in classes and the fee has been added to their account.Deadline: September 9

Pay Your Bill (If Applicable)
Students from international universities can pay their bill in EagleService after enrollment has occured.
Billing arrangements for domestic students depend on their home school agreements with WSP. For details about your specific billing process, please contact the WSP Team. Please note that WSP billing does not reflect the AU academic calendar billing dates and is typically finalized two months after the start of the term.

Add/Drop Course Deadline
Available after course registration
Email your WSP Advisor to request any needed changes to your course registration by September 9. Courses dropped after the deadline will be recorded with a “W” on your AU transcript.

Confirm Your Internship + Submit the Experiential Learning Form (ELF)
All Students
Complete the ELF after you secure an internship placement
(within the first 2 weeks of the semester)
International Students Only
You may not begin your academic training until you have received an amended DS-2019 from AU’s Office of International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS). Submitting the ELF is the first step to receiving a work authorization.
